Useless Against an Assailant

A loud crash awakened our petite daughter from a deep sleep. As a single mom, her first instinct was to protect her small children from harm. She sprang from bed and grabbed a bat that was leaning against the wall. With pounding heart and bat clutched to strike, she rushed down the hall. She discovered that the disturbance was caused by the harmless crash of a shower curtain. She then saw that the weapon she was clutching so tightly was the hollow plastic bat of her 2-year old—useless against an assailant.

Is this how we face challenges? We grab from our resources for weapons to fight our battles only to find them grossly inadequate, even useless against the intruders of our lives.

God is our shield, defense, bulwark, and strong tower. He’ll even fight for us. Our resources are inadequate because God never intended that we defend ourselves by ourselves. If we could learn to reach for him, rather than our plastic bats, we’d find that God is never useless against an assailant, and He’ll tell us when to grab our bats.

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee. —Psalm 56:3 (NASB)
