Kingdom Pigs

“Any Christian who is not a hero is a pig.” –Leon Bloy
That is another thing I heard in church on Sunday. I didn’t like that. It didn’t build me up like the talk about God’s redemption and His transformation of the things that we transfer to Him. I don’t feel like a hero, but I sure don’t want to be a pig. But the quote has stuck with me and continued to haunt me.
Bloy was getting at the fact that as Christians, we have inside information. We know of the life available in Jesus Christ. We have the strength to carry us through hard times. We have resources and power available to us that are far beyond ourselves. If we aren’t sharing those things with others, we are hording them for ourselves, and we are pigs.
In the last twenty-four hours, it has occurred to me that we also know the feeling of peace and security concerning our future. Eternity is something we can look forward to with hope. The horrible incident at Virginia Tech is a reminder that I don’t know what a day will bring for me—or for that other person I come in contact with. I’m impacted with the brevity of life, and I don’t want to be a pig.
