Holding On

The other day, two birds were locked in a struggle in our driveway. One gripped the leg of the other in its beak and would not let go. The captured bird wrestled but could not break loose. They jerked, thrashed, and rolled for at least five minutes—breaking free only when I almost ran over them with my car.

We are sometimes like that in our struggles. After an offense, we often hold onto the hurt, remaining bitter with the offender and refusing to let go. We don’t realize that we are trapped too. We are jerked, tossed and tumbled. As long as we cling to our unforgiveness and bitterness, we are held in bondage.

Jesus died that we might be free. We cannot be free in Him while we continue somersaulting in bitterness against another! God has told us to forgive, to release those who offend us. Is it not wise to release the offender into God’s hands? Only then will we be able to attain freedom for ourselves.

But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. —Matthew 6:15 (KJV)
