A Conversation With My Worst Enemy

“I will give you purpose, beauty, and pleasure. I will give your life meaning And make it worth living. I have offered this for all these years. Since before you were born I have been your constant companion. I gave excitement to your youth, Cheered you on in good times, Comforted you in bad times. I am in you, Part of you. I am your servant and closest friend. My name is Sin. Let us make peace So you can finally have rest.” “You gave me purpose that turned into emptiness. You gave me beauty that was twisted into ugliness. And being made of beauty, It was doubly hideous. You gave me pleasure that lasted but a moment And took true fulfillment far from me. You have taken true meaning from me And tainted everything good in my life. As long as I can remember, I have known you intimately. You turned me inward in bad times, And drove me to be absorbed in myself, Cut off from all true comfort. You drove me to excess in good times, So I pursued the gift instead of the Giver And lost both. I pursued things instead of relationships And lost both. You served me Only to make me your slave And mold me into your likeness. I hate you. You are my worst enemy. Though you be with me until I die, I will never make peace with you. “I have met the One who is life. He is purpose of infinite worth, Beauty that is pure, Pleasure that is full and eternal. He is life's meaning. “He has conquered you, And soon He will annihilate you. Then I will have rest Forever.”—Jonathan Camenisch
